Location Info and other sites for possible demonstrations

About Westin Kierland Resort & Spa
6902 East Greenway Parkway, Scottsdale, AZ
This is a really fancy place surrounded by more disgusting fancy places for rich people, all part of Kierland Commons which is described as a
“lifestyle center”.  According to wikipedia, a lifestyle center “combines the traditional retail functions of a shopping mall with leisure amenities
oriented towards upscale consumers.”  The location is several miles from downtown Phoenix, but lies on the border between Scottsdale (aka
Snotsdale) and Phoenix in a suburban-ish area.  Surrounded on the north by a huge golf course, and on the south by a parking lot, it lies just west
of the shopping portion of the “commons” which is described as a Main-Street-style development which mainly just means it’s outdoors along
a road with light traffic. North Scottsdale Road borders the place on the east. You can read more about it and see pics here:

About First Friday: The First Friday Art Walk takes place around 7-9pm (so it’s dark) in downtown Phoenix in a gentrified/gentrifying arts district. During a typical First Friday event, hundreds of people of all sorts fill the sidewalks and some streets (that the police block off for the event), walking to galleries, shows, and outdoor booths that sell art, food, etc., or congregating around performers or to socialize.  There have been a handful of marches during this event because it is an opportune moment to gain access to a diverse group of people, some of whom join in on the spot, and to take advantage of the open streets and the not-so-open streets while the police are mostly distracted by the regular First Friday chaos.  Some photos and info about a previous demonstration at First Friday:

Freeport McMoRan
333 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85004
Downtown Phoenix
Member of ALEC. [Recently,] strikes halted operations at two of the world’s largest mines, both owned by the multinational Freeport McMoRan. At Cerro Verde, in Peru’s Arequipa region, some 1,200 workers walked out Sept. 14, following through on their threat to launch an indefinite strike to demand higher wages. The next day, 10,000 workers walked out at the company’s flagship Grasberg mine in West Papua, Indonesia, demanding that their pay be raised from the current $1.50 to $3 an hour to the global standard of at least $17 an hour. The company, which has come under fire in recent years for paying millions of dollars to Indonesian military and police to provide security, has also been the target of demonstrations because of alleged pollution and the unfair distribution of profits.
At least seven protesters have been killed as of October 24th.

Wells Fargo & Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office
1st Ave and Washington
Downtown Phoenix Wells Fargo Bank
Not only does Wells Fargo own many shares with ALEC-affiliated private prison company Geo Group (Wells Fargo & Company: 3,623,603 shares; 5.59% of common stock owned), Sheriff Joe has his office in the huge Wells Fargo building in the middle of downtown Phoenix.  Maricopa County pays an estimated $900,000 a year to rent two floors of the building. (They will be moving in early 2013).

Alliance Defense Fund

Member of ALEC.
This is near the location of the ALEC conference, but perhaps not easy walking distance.  “On November 9th, 2008 activists from the international queer liberation group, Bash Back! protested the stance and actions of the notoriously anti-queer mega-church, Mount Hope at their headquarters compound in Lansing, Michigan… So in May of 2009 a right-wing public interest group, the Alliance Defense Fund filed a federal law suit on behalf of Mt. Hope Church under the Freedom of Access to Clinical Entrances Act, naming 13 individuals, as well as Bash Back! as a whole, Bash Back! Lansing, and 20 “John” and “Jane Doe”s (yet to be identified). The suit seeks an injunction that could seriously hinder future activism that resists the institutionalization of religious fundamentalism. As well as an unknown sum of money in supposed “damages” and trial costs.” Read more: http://themounthopeinfinity.wordpress.com/

Taser International
17800 N 85th St, Scottsdale, AZ
Member of ALEC.
This is near the location of the ALEC conference, but perhaps not easy walking distance. Taser is the most common brand of electroshock gun and is used by police officers across the country.  Promoted as a way to cut down on police shootings, use of force incidents have drastically gone up, and in many occasions Tasers have been used by police in the most despicable of circumstances.  Taser Int’l also does animal testing.

These are the jails that are right next to each other in downtown Phoenix
tend to be more for booking and temporary housing, where as other jails
including Tent City are further from downtown.  This is where one might be
brought directly if one is arrested in Phoenix.  It is uncertain what
jurisdiction the Kierland Commons fall under.
These jails are not privately run, but are run by the Maricopa County
Sheriff’s Office/Sheriff Joe Arpaio.  The jails have been targets of
protest during the fight against SB 1070 and other police misconduct.
Sheriff Joe’s jails are just as bad or worse than any private prison in
many ways.  Arpaio benefits through his political career, if not
financially in some way, by enforcing laws like SB1070.
